Hi David
Your guidelines seem very draconian to me.
Are you saying that if your computing service, for example, wants to
include a screen image of a Web site its it user documentation, it would
have to get permission?
Are you saying that anyone who creates a Web page containing a link to
an external site will have to get permission from the site? This won't
happen.
Are you saying that I will have to get permission from you to link to a
page on your Web site? (1) I won't know I have to do this, unless every
page is labelled. (2) I suspect most people wouldn't bother asking.
It you make it difficult for people to link to you and to include images
about your Web site, YOU will lose out. Most organisations welcome links to
their Web site, as it drives traffic to them and helps with ratings in
Google.
Are you saying that in a portal which, say, links to all UK HE and FE
colleges, a link to your site won't be permitted unless they have some
acknowledgements? This won't happen?
I notice that there is a link to you from
http://www.niss.ac.uk/sites/fe-cis.html#D
Are you going to ask NISS to remove you from the list unless they give
you acknowledgments (which will adversely affect the look and feel of the
page)?
Rather than invent these cumbersome procedures, why not address these
concerns (which I think are minor) by saying that "Authors should remove
links from pages and images from Web sites and printed publications if the
copyright author so requests".
My views - I'm interested in what others think.
Brian
