Locating the Victorians :a major international conference
commemorating 150 years since the Great Exhibition and the centenary
of Queen Victoria's death at the Science Museum, as part of the South
Kensington Festival on 12-15 July 2001
The year 2001 marks the sesquicentenary of the Great Exhibition of
1851 and the centenary of the death of Queen Victoria. Coinciding with
the dawn of a new millennium, these anniversaries provide the
opportunity to review our interpretation of the culture of the
Victorian period. The Science Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum and
the Natural History Museum in London's South Kensington, a cultural
quarter itself funded from the profits of the Great Exhibition, is
therefore hosting a great Victorian festival with major exhibitions
and an international conference which will interpret the 19th century
for the benefit of the 21st. The BSHS is one of several sponsors.
The dates of the conference are 12-15 July 2001. The location is South
Kensington with events at the Museums. Accommodation can be arranged
through Imperial College at local university dormitories and hotels.
Before and after the meeting there will be a variety of more
specialised groups meeting under the rubric of 'The Victorian Fringe'.
The registration cost will be stlg130. We regret that we must ask even
speakers to pay this; however thanks to the generosity of the British
Academy, bursaries are available for students and younger scholars and
a very few for scholars from overseas. **Note: the BSHS will also
subsidise Postgraduate BSHS members attending this conference (half of
registration cost). You will need to pay the full registration first,
and then claim back half the amount by writing, with receipt, to the
BSHS Executive Secretary, 31 High Street, Stanford in the Vale,
Faringdon, OXON, SN7 8LH **
The meeting is being structured so as to be interdisciplinary,
wide-ranging and summative. It is intended to foster communication
between students of all branches of Victorian culture. The conference
has been organised into 21 strands in seven parallel sessions over the
three days 13-15 July with plenary meetings in the evenings of 12-15
July. The strands, their organisers and most of the speakers are
available here.
In addition there will be the opportunity for table top displays both
for scholars and booksellers. A series of visits during the day and
social events during the evening has also been planned.
The detailed timings are now being formulated but the preliminary
outline is as follows: Thursday 12 July morning and afternoon: visit
to Royal Mausoleum, Frogmore [in the grounds of Windsor Castle].
Thursday pm: Registration. Thursday evening drinks followed by plenary
lecture given by David Cannadine chaired by Asa Briggs at Imperial
College. Friday 13 July: 9.00 am - 6.00 pm 7 parallel strands;
