While I agree with much of that which Elizabeth Parker writes, I do take
issue with this. I would certainly define most of my classmates at UCL
('98/'99) as being dynamic and having an open approach to their future. It
is true that nearly all of us came from archive rather than RM placements
(and I must agree with Bruce that this is what drew, and still draws, most
people to the profession), but with such a weighting of the course towards
RM issues it is no surprise that some now work in RM and are finding it
interesting and challenging. The extra cash has not gone un-noticed either.
With a few die-hard exceptions I would suggest that the majority quickly
realised that RM is the growth sector and may well open other avenues for
career development. Far from being focussed solely on a future in a
'traditional' role as an archivist, myself and many of my peers are prepared
to look at things from a wider 'information management' angle and would
happily grasp opportunites for more wide ranging job remits and prospects.
However, facts and figures may well show this up for a lot of hot air...
Regards
Richard
