The Surrey Institute is currently giving consideration to the length, and
shape, of its academic year. Currently, the year comprises two 15-week
semesters, with one week's break between them; and an induction week for
new students before the start of semester one.
However, the traditional term structure has been retained for vacation
purposes, which means that the teaching year commences in early October
and is broken for four weeks at Christmas and four weeks at Easter,
obviously cutting across normal teaching time. This structure is in many
ways less than ideal, and it was therefore agreed that I should contact
colleagues at other institutions which operate a semesterised system to
ask:
a) when, approximately, does your teaching year start?
b) how long do you break for at Christmas?
c) how long do you break for at Easter?
d) if you have an inter-semester break, how long is this?
e) when, approximately, does your teaching year end?
f) how long after the end of the teaching year are results announced?
g) how long after the announcement of results does your award ceremony
take place?
I should be grateful if colleagues could reply to me direct; I shall then
post a summary of responses to the mailbase.
Thanks in advance for any information you are able to provide.
Cheers
Jon
