Jane,
I bought a brand new Sony professional less than a year ago. THey are not
as widely available (or as widely known even by people in that sort of
business) as they once were when they came out in the early eighties, but
they are, in fact, still being made. I have spent a fair bit of time
exploring what was available on the market before I bought my second Sony
professional (including various digital alternatives), but in my judgement,
it remained the best tool for my purposes. In particular I find that Sony
Professional has a very sensitive and wideranging ajustable recording level
- AND a peak meter, so that you can constantly monitor whether you in fact
are getting anything on the tape. I often struggled with very bad recording
quality while I had a temporary replacement of my SOny (greatly
complicating transcription) , and those two features of the Sony makes the
crucial difference in my experience.
I would certainly stick with Sony professional if I was you. // Jens
