1. Stock provision. I'd be grateful if some indication of annual library
expenditure on Media Studies could be given (confidence will be preserved on
this information, other than as anonymised examples). If possible, some
indication of: * Broad FTE student numbers 1570 FTE
* Breakdown between monographs, periodicals and video/DVD and other
formats would also be very helpful. One third Periodicals /One
Third Books We buy our videos and DVD's from the book budget.
2. Equipment/provision/Special facilities: Our current AV provision in our
Library & Information Centre could best be described as meagre. Some
indication of how many of the following bits of equipment you have/think are
necessary would be invaluable:
* Monitors and VCRs 4 in three site Libraries
* Dedicated monitors for broadcasts (including satellite) This is all
handled by the Media Support Group
* Other equipment 1 DVD player in each of three Libraries
3. Loans: We've currently justified our low number of VCRs by claiming that
almost all students have access to a video and can borrow from our video
collection:
* Are your videos loanable? YES - with the quantity of material on
video now in all subjects it seems easier to treat them as loanable
(like books). Also with the variety of formats (games, DVD, and so on)
segregation by format is less practicable.
* Do you have any special arrangements/facilities for small group
viewings? No but we do provide Video Players in Group Study Rooms
* Are your videos on open access? YES
* If so, are they shelved separately or integrated with other formats?
Integrated but this is very unpopular in the Media School.
* Do you have any security problems? Videos go missing but not more
than books.
4. Location: Is your main equipment/viewing facility:
* In your Library/LRC? YES
* In Media Services/AV Services/or similar unit They will provide back
up to students who want to view outside LRC - but the Media School is very
well equiped for this.
* In an academic department/school/faculty
* In a separate facility
5. Networked delivery: As more PCs become DVD compatible, does anyone use
student PCs as a means of:
* Viewing individual DVDs We have dedicated DVD Players in each
Library - need to be aware of screen quality and sound quality not
really available on PC's
* Networking DVD/video material Not yet have a look at the BUFVC MAAS
Project on this subject www.bufvc.ac.uk
there are also different flavours of Media Course - at Bournemouth
University ours is very Production Based - strong links with industry a
great deal of work goes into linking theory with practice (ie producing
work) - there is another flavour which is more akin to Film Studies which is
almost all theory.
