Subject: What fish?
I am preparing a publicaton about a medieval moated site that is the subject
of
a millennium commission funded archaeological project. Does anyone know what
sort of fish were kept in medieval fishponds? I have been told that pike and
bream were replaced over time by carp as they are hardier, grow quickly and
are more palatable. Izaak Walton in his 'compleat angler' of 1653, however,
says that carp had been in England for about 100 years - which would mean
that
they could not have been widespread in medieval England.
