Counting Heads: An Introduction to the Census, Poor Law
data and Vital Registration
by David A. Gatley and Paul S. Ell.
Overview
--------
This book provides an introduction to the history of census
taking and vital registration in the British Isles. It looks
at how the early censuses were undertaken, at why the data
was collected, and at how the results of these inquiries
were published.
It also explains how this data has been compiled for
publication in the SECOS database, on the accompanying
CD-ROM.
There is also a brief introduction to the versions of three
topographies of England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland,
dating from the middle of the 19th Century, which are
included on the accompanying CD-ROM. There are: -
1. James Pigot's Pocket Topography of England, which was
published in about 1840.
2. James Pigot's Topography of Scotland, which was
contained within his Directory of Scotland, published in
1837
3. Isaac Slater's Topography of Ireland, which was
contained within his Directory of Ireland, published in
1844.
