Dear Colleagues
It gives me no pleasure to report on the latest
development in the story of the Goethe-Institut at
Manchester.
This popular and successful institution, which has served
the needs of business, schools, universities and
individuals interested in German culture and language in
the city of Manchester and the entire north of England for
thirty-three years is effectively being shut down. From 30
June 2001 there will be two staff, a representative of the
centre and an administrative assistant. Despite the
constant and intense demand, there will then exist neither
structures nor personnel to carry on the work of teaching
German and providing support to ambitious enterprises,
hard-pressed schools and resource-hungry universities.
Cultural events will cease. The Library will close. Over
twenty jobs will be lost. The Goethe-Institut in London
will be left to provide for an additional population of
some twenty million in a catchment area stretching from
Birmingham to Lancaster, Liverpool to Newcastle,
Aberystwyth to Hull.
This is happening because the GI budget has been
restricted to historical levels, whilst the GI is
simultaneously committed to opening new branches elsewhere.
The deplorable plan by the British Council to close four
regional centres in Germany, which would leave only the
Berlin office as its presence in Germany, may have been a
political factor in the GI's decision.
The Friends of the Goethe Institute Manchester have pledged
to campaign against the proposed closure. Similar campaigns
have already achieved considerable success in France and
Italy. As a first step, the Friends of the Goethe Institute
are collecting the signatures of interested parties who
support this initiative. Please take a little time to visit
the website http://www.liv.ac.uk/fogim, where a membership
application form can be downloaded. Signatures can be sent
direct to [log in to unmask] and will be mounted on the
site.

the closure of British Council offices in Germany, go to

Please post this message on. A German version follows.
Liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen
ich leite eine trostlose Nachricht weiter.
Das Goethe-Institut hat die praktische Schließung
des Standorts Manchester beschlossen. Seit 33 Jahren dient
Die Initiative Friends of the Goethe Institute
hatten in Italien, in Frankreich schon Erfolg. Deswegen
bitten wir alle Interessierten, die Friends of the Goethe
