BRITISH ASSOCIATION OF SLAVONIC AND EAST EUROPEAN
STUDIES (BASEES)

Invitation to Postgraduates to join the Association

BASEES is an organisation of scholars actively involved in Slavonic and
East European studies, Its membership includes people across the
disciplines (including historians, social scientists, modern linguists and
people studying literature and the arts) and at different stages in their
academic careers, from new graduates to professors.

There are numerous ways in which BASEES membership is useful for scholars
in the field of Slavonic and East European studies:

BASEES holds an annual conference (usually at the end of March or
beginning of April in Cambridge) which provides an opportunity for scholars
to present and listen to papers on recent developments in the subject, and
to meet people from the UK and other countries with like interests. The
annual conference also has a publishers' exhibition at which new
publications can be previewed. In recent years postgraduates have held
their own session at the conference, which has allowed them to exchange
idea about the research in which they are engaged.

Postgraduate members of BASEES can apply to the association for financial
assistance to attend the annual conference, particularly if they are
presenting a paper. In some cases this extends to all the registration and
accommodation costs.

Postgraduate members may also apply to the Association's Research and
Development Committee for a grant to assist them in their research.

Members of BASEES, including postgraduates, receive a regular
Newsletter.

Membership of BASEES gives automatic membership of ICCEES (the
International Council for Central and East European Studies). Every five
years ICCEES holds a week-long international congress; details of this and
of other international events in the field are circulated to BASEES members.

BASEES provides a forum for discussion about Slavonic and East European
studies in UK institutions of higher education and represents the interests
of its members to government and state institutions. It has done much in
recent years to campaign for new posts in the field and for improved
provision for graduates and post-doctoral scholars in the FSU and Eastern
Europe.

If you are a postgraduate registered at a higher education institution in
the United Kingdom, carrying our research in the field of Slavonic and East
European studies, you may apply to become an associate member of the
Association. All you need to do is to send an email to the Membership
Secretary at [log in to unmask], or write to Dr David Moon, BASEES
Membership Secretary, Department of History, University of Strathclyde,
McCance Building, 16 Richmond Street, Glasgow G1 1XQ. On the application
form you will need the signatures of two full members of the Association.
The annual membership fee for postgraduates, as associate members, is only
(cheque payable to BASEES, or by banker's order).
