This is my own thoughts on the article...
In my opinion the article has made too many generalisations about
individuals with Aspergers Syndrome. I feel that it the editor has not
thought about the consequences around discrimination and prejudice this may
cause for many individuals with Aspergers within Society.
Just because a person has anti-social behaviour(criminal behaviour) does
that mean that we have to equate Aspergers Syndrome has being the cause ? I
don't believe that Aspergers individuals will intentionally go out to harm
others. I do believe that many Aspergers will be within the Criminal Justice
System, due to them have emotional and behavioural difficulties which has
developed throughout their lifecourse.
Many Aspergers Syndrome individuals will have experienced bullying and abuse
throughout the lifecourse, especially within their childhood's. Also they
will have felt isolated and lonely which others would misunderstand their
emotional and behavioural coping strategies.
I find that there is ignorance and prejudices towards all disabled people
within society and this create a culture of fear and mistrust. This article
in The Times has caused many Aspergers Syndrome individuals to feel angry
and does not to change attitudes and ignorance, but will be ammunition to
fuel prejudice and discrimination within society.
The media needs to get a balanced view and has moral and ethical
responsibilities towards all individuals with Aspergers Syndrome and other
Autistic Spectrum Disorders and/or Specific Learning Difficulties, including
Dyspraxia, ADHD, Dyslexia etc.
The medical model seems to want to rationalise all behaviour and fit every
individual nicely into boxes. These experts believe that medical sciences
have all the answer to understanding the human condition. They believe they
have the truth, but this hegemony and is very dangerous and against human
rights.

Colin Revell
