Hi,
As many of you will be aware, the Mailbase system which hosts many
academic mailing lists moved to a new system called JISCmail recently. The
changeover took place the other weekend.
It seems that our list (Crit-Geog-Forum) has been successfully moved
across to the new system. You do not need to re-join as the entire list,
including archives and membership, was transferred across.
For most functions all you need to do is change your email (and browser
addresses) by replacing the mailbase section with jiscmail. For example to
send a message a list send it to: [log in to unmask]
The list's website on JISCMAIL does not (yet) appear as nice (IMO) as the
site at Mailbase. However, I shall see what can be done about this. The
URL is http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/crit-geog-forum.html
Other functionality, such as the sending of the forum's welcome and
farewell information messages appears not to be working and this is
another area I shall try and fix as soon as possible.
Currently if you send mail to a Mailbase address (such as you may be used
to using for this list), it will be passed on to JISCmail if possible and
you will be sent a message reminding you to use the new JISCmail address
in future.
The JISC website has more details of the changeover at
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/docs/transition.htm
Reference cards showing the differences for list users and for list owners
between the old and the new service can be found at
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/docs/ref-cards.htm
The following comes from the JISCMail site:
Transfer of National Academic Mailing List Service from Mailbase to
JISCmail
The transfer of the Mailbase service to JISCmail will take place over the
weekend of 25/26 November. The JISCmail service will commence Monday 27
November 2000.
As a list member you will want to know if you have to do anything. The
answer is very little. Below are some questions with some responses which
will explain this change.
RECEIVING POSTINGS
Any postings to the list will arrive at your mailbox as before.
POSTING TO YOUR LIST
The host address will change from Monday 27 November. Use the address
[log in to unmask] from this time. If you forget to do this do not
worry as Mailbase will be re-directing messages for your list to the
JISCmail service.
JOIN OR LEAVE
Should you wish to leave a list, both the join and leave instructions are
the same as they were at Mailbase. The only difference is that you should
mail to [log in to unmask] instead of [log in to unmask]
[You can also join or leave the list using the list's website
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/crit-geog-forum.html ]
PASSWORDS
You may very well never need a password. As a list member it will only
become necessary for you to register a password if you wish to use the Web
to post to the list or change your list membership options, such as mail
or digest. If your list is a closed list, for which only members can
access the web archives, you will need a password to access your list's
Web home page. In order to register a password go to the JISCmail Home
Page www.jiscmail.ac.uk and follow the navigation provided. Don't worry if
you forget your password, it is very easy to register a new one.
YOUR LIST'S HOME PAGE ON THE WEB
If your list has web archives, then there is a web page for your list. It
contains amongst other things, access to stored archives messages. This
means that you do not have to keep copies cluttering up your mailbox if
you do not wish to. This page also permits you to post to the list, change
your personal membership settings and access files associated with your
list.
FILES ASSOCIATED WITH LISTS
Any files associated with your list will also be visible from the list
home page, http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/crit-geog-forum.html
A USER GUIDE
A User Guide to using JISCmail is available on the JISCmail Web.
HELP
Finally, if you find you do not understand or have experienced some
difficulty using JISCmail. Please contact the helpline on 01235 446780 or
mail to [log in to unmask] Alternatively you may wish to
contact your list owner if you feel it is relevant to him or her.
