depends on how many hours you expect your staff to work, in the past on the
list we have debated how many consultants you need to provide 24/7
consultant cover on the shop floor and i'm not sure if the how many nurses
it takes to staff an ITU bed dicussion was on here as well.
24*7 =168
consultants are contracted for 35hr pw baisc iirc = 4.8 35hrs in a week
if your staff worked 42 hrs per week each 'slot' requires a minimum of 4
people to fill it to provide cover all week ( not counting leave, sickness,
education ( as a learner or as a teacher) and other protected time.)
the figure of one patient per doc per hour was quoted by John Chambers-
does this make it a bit clearer
each post of whatever type requires a number of staff to fill it ranging
from
2 for 84 hr working weeks,4 for 42 hour working weeks to 4.8 for 35 hr
working weeks

this is where the rough figure of one patient per hour per doc came from,
although see your point that case mix will have an impact on it .
