Dear John,
I have for many years used a succession of ground-down (not
"broken")dinner-knives for weeding between the crazy paving of our terrace,
and also for getting dandelions out of the lawn. It was Kipling's reference
to them in The Glory of the Garden that gave me the idea. The best place to
buy suitable table-knives (which should not taper or curve) is at one's
local Oxfam shop. Saw off just short of the round tip at right-angles to the
blade, grind the forward edge so that it is sharp enough to cut through the
stem of a weed when pushed against it, and grind smooth the two resulting
sharp corners to avoid accidents. I can't say that this implement results
in Glory; but it does the job!
Yours ever
George Engle
