Adrian,
Pethidine is known to have a higher incidence of vomiting than the other
"classic" opiates and in a proportion of the population (said to be >10% -
no reference) leads to a dysphoric response, where the pain becomes "jangly"
and more unpleasant. I haven't used it personally (if you know what I mean)
for 10 years and we removed it entirely from our department 18 months ago.

What have you got against pethidine, Helen? Seriously, I'm happy using any
opiate - and I mean any opiate - so I'm intrigued to hear of your antipathy
towards pethidine. Do you have well founded pharmacological reasons for this
aversion, or have you just had some bad experiences with it?
P.S. Does that last paragraph look like Helen and I are on some sort of
Mailing List for junkies??
