Colleagues,
I am posting this comment to the general list in response to Mario Burg's
query on literature and film to draw everyone's attention to a new book on
Italian film.
One of my colleagues at the Univ of Pittsburgh, Marcia Landy, has recently
published "Italian Film" (Cambridge Univ Press, 2000); you can find out
more about the book at the CUP website (www.cambridge.org). Her book deals
with Italian film in the context of Italy's historical, social, political,
and cultural evolution this past century. While the book may not consider
literature and film in the precise terms Mario Burg mentions, it does have
a chapter that deals with romance, "Challenging the Folklore Romance" (chap
3).
Prof. Landy provides a very full and excellent treatment of the Italian
cinematic tradition.
