Not sure that there is any data to support "side effects" of creatine.
The big problem re creatine as I see it is the mis-information put out by
companies trying to hide the real facts from the public.
There are several manufacturers of creatine in the world but they produce
very different end products. Not all creatine is of the same standard.
Poor manufacturing processes can result in large amounts of by-products
being produced which ends up being ingested by the unwitting consumer.
By-products/impurities that should be checked for are :
Creatinine-----typically look for less than 50 parts per million.
Dicyandiamide---typically look for less than 20 parts per million.
Dihydrotriazine-----should not be present at all (but very often is).Worth
noting that this substance has unknown pharmaceutical and toxological
properties.
Sodium------ levels should be as low as possible.
Only a few companies actually market this information and that is because a
lot of creatine on the market is of a very low quality. It would be no
surprise to learn that low quality creatine is available to supplement
companies at a much lower price.
Remember that supplement companies don't actually produce the creatine they
sell. Beware of clever marketing that may see you buying creatine with a
whole host of impurities.
Claims of "100% purity" and "Pharmaceutical grade" are just not true.
Ask suppliers about levels of impurities and see how you get on.If they
can't prove levels of the above by-products/impurities then it usually
follows that they have not tested for them.
My experience has been that the highest grade of creatine is manufactured in
Germany by SKW.
So when people talk about "side effects" of creatine do they actually know
that all creatine is not the same.
I am not aware of any studies that have PROVEN creatine, used in the correct
dosages and under the correct conditions,to be the cause of any side
effects.
There are rumours that circulate about stomach upset, cramps and muscle
pulls.I would suggest that these are far more likely to be due to
un-dissolved creatine in the gut, poor levels of hydration and improper
workloads/technique during training.
Hope this has been helpful.
