System Three Social Research (STSR) is the UK social research 
unit of NFO Worldwide, one of the world’s largest research groups. 
STSR is a newly-formed unit that has grown out of a long-standing 
collaboration between the sister organisations of System Three in 
Scotland and Public Attitude Surveys in England and Wales. With 
offices in London and Edinburgh, the Unit provides UK-wide social 
research and consultancy to clients in central and local 
government, the voluntary sector and academia. We carry out work 
across a range of policy areas, including employment, education, 
health, social security, criminology and housing. 

STSR has the following opportunities for quantitative social 
researchers in its London office:

Associate Director 
Reporting to, and working closely with, the Director of STSR’s 
London office, the successful candidate will play a key role in 
business development and will be fully involved in helping shape the 
strategy and future direction of the business. Heading up a team of 
researchers in the unit, you will also be responsible for the design 
and successful completion of projects and for staff development 
and performance within your team. 

The successful candidate is likely to have at least five years’ 
experience of conducting quantitative social surveys, and to be 
able to demonstrate the following attributes:
a   thorough knowledge of social research methods
a   commitment to high standards of design and delivery
a   high level of literacy, numeracy and analytical ability
the ability to communicate effectively with clients and 
    colleagues alike
the commercial acumen needed to support the profitable 
    growth of the business in a competitive market
the energy, enthusiasm and determination needed to meet 
    challenging business performance targets


Researcher
Working within the social research team in London, the successful 
candidate’s role will be to provide support to a senior researcher in 
all aspects of running and managing research projects, from 
costing and drafting proposals through to reporting and presenting 
findings. Key tasks will include preparing fieldwork documents, 
involvement in survey and questionnaire design, piloting 
questionnaires, liaising with operations department staff, specifying 
and checking analysis, report writing, designing and preparing 
presentation charts, preparing costings and drafting material for 
research proposals. This role will suit a candidate in the early 
stages of a career in social research or who wishes to start a 
career in this area. A degree or appropriate qualification, ideally in 
a related subject, is essential. A relevant post-graduate 
qualification is also desirable.

In addition, we are looking for someone with the following attributes:
an  understanding of basic research methods and data analysis;
the ability to work to tight deadlines and to juggle priorities on a 
    day-to-day basis;
an  organised and detail-conscious approach to work;
a   background in or understanding of one or more key social 
    policy areas;
goodcommunication skills, both written and oral;
a   high level of numeracy and analytical ability;
the ability to work independently, take on responsibility and 
    manage their own workload;
basiccomputer literacy and familiarity with relevant software 
    packages (e.g. SPSS, Word, Excel).
