>From 1 January 2001 on, our research group, the Centre for Logic
and Philosophy of Science, will engage a total of four researchers for
two new research projects. We have not yet taken final decisions for
some positions. Moreover, some of the people we shall engage, will
hopefully obtain a position as a research assistant on an individual
project during 2001 or 2002 and hence will have to be replaced then.
As it is in our interest to obtain the best qualified researchers
available, and as all EC-citizens qualify for the positions, we
contact a small group of selected colleagues to spread the word.

One (four year) project concerns the foundations of adaptive logics (1
researcher), the second (six year) project concerns applications of
adaptive logics to problems in the philosophy of science, including
the development of appropriate formal systems (three researchers). A
brief outline of the projects is available at:
http://logica.rug.ac.be/centrum/research/

We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:
- excellent study results in philosophy (or, for one position,
mathematics) - MA-dissertation on a topic that may be considered as
a
good preparation for working on the project - hard working and highly
motivated for the job - able to work independently and take
initiatives - able to draft a decent paper - speak and write very good
English - not having been formally employed before - an open and
friendly character; be able to function well in a group - interested
in spending a minimum of two years in our research group

They may expect a nice and active working environment, with a good
library, computer facilities, and many international contacts. The net
starting wage is about 55.000 BEF. Candidates interested in taking a
PhD in Ghent may be selected for a 2 year stipend (the net wage is
about the same as above). If they make good progress, they will be
renewed for a second period of two years. The PhD should be presented
before the end of these four years.

More information about our research group may be obtained from the
internet address
 http://logica.rug.ac.be/centrum/
More information on adaptive logics is available from the preprint
list at http://logica.rug.ac.be/centrum/writings/

Past experience has revealed that people aspiring to write a PhD,
especially if they intend to defend it in Ghent, are the best
candidates for this type of job.

If you know candidates that qualify for these positions, and are
willing to back them up by insuring us that they qualify as required,
feel free to pass this information to them. Given the importance of
the success of the projects, let me stress that we need really good
candidates for which you are willing to answer.

In some countries, a stay abroad without ties with a home institution
is not in the interest of young researchers. We trust that you will
take your responsibility in this respect and possibly work out a
special arrangement with us.

These and other projects also provide us with the possibility to
attract _post-doctoral_ fellows for periods up to 12 months to
co-operate in one of the projects. This includes people that took
their PhD less than 5 years ago as well as people that took their PhD
between 5 and 10 years ago. It is essential that the research project
of the visiting post-doctoral researcher is directly relevant to one
of our current projects. More information on the conditions of such
visits is available from
 http://sun.nfwo.be/organiek/org4feng.html

With kind regards,

Diderik Batens
also on behalf of Erik Weber and Joke Meheus
