Postgraduate Scholarship for PhD in Philosophy,
University of Auckland.
Students are invited to apply for a PhD scholarship made available in
association with the Marsden Grant awarded to Robert Nola for
research
into theories of scientific method.
Value of the scholarship: $NZ 15,000 per year (fees covered by the
Grant) (Note that students might also be able to supplement the
stipend through tutoring and/or other work in the Philosophy
Department.)
Tenure: The scholarship is tenurable for a maximum of 3 years
(between
January 2001 and December 2003) with a starting date as soon as
possible in 2001. Place of tenure is in the Philosophy Department of
the University of Auckland.
Closing date for applications: 21 December 2000.
Topic area: In accordance with the Marsden Grant the topic for
research must fall within the field: recent theories of method and the
nature of science. This can be quite broadly construed, and would
include, as well as methodology, arguments concerning scientific
realism, the structure of theories, incommensurability, theses of
anti-method, etc.
Qualification: at least a good Honours or Masters degree in Philosophy
or in History and Philosophy of Science.

(a) a CV outlining your academic career to date; (b) a copy of
your academic record: (c) an outline of your research proposal (no
more than a page); (d) a sample of written work (research essay,
dissertation, etc); (e) contact address over Christmas-New Year
period.
