Dear All,
first of all thanks to those of you who came to the SPPA conference
in Glasgow this weekend - special thanks to the speakers and to
Andy McGonigal for all his work in organizing the conference, and for
joining the (now 100% increased from just being the caretaker)
committee. Also thanks to our new local contacts at St.Andrew's and
Aberdeen for not resisting too much when volunteered.
We're hoping to arrange another SPPA event towards the end of the
Spring term (i.e. around Easter) and are looking for volunteers -
anyone interested please mail the caretaker.
Further to some comments received at a short SPPA meeting held at
the conference:
** If people feel there is sometimes a bit much mail from the list:
Unfortunately, we can't tailor the list exactly to suit individual interests,
and the aim is to cover a broad range of interests. If you feel like your
inbox is being swamped, you can always check the headlines and
delete if it doesn't look relevant to you.
- Messages from the list can also be read on the web at:
http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists-p-t/scot-pg-phil/
if you prefer to check them in your own time.
** Some people felt there should be more Scottish items on the list.
Most information about current seminars/speaker events etc. should
be available from links to the Scottish philosophy departments from
the SPPA webpage:
http://www.st-and.ac.uk/~www_sppa/Universities.html
This hasn't been fully updated as the current webmaster is on an
overbooked schedule. We hope to find a solution (soon) that will
allow other people access to the files so we can get updates more
frequently. Anyone currently registered as a St.Andrew's student is
especially encouraged to volunteer as we would then be saved the
extra trouble of moving the files from their current location.
** Reminder/encouragement: People on the list can also post things
to the list directly, just put [log in to unmask] in the to:
field.
** Finally, a few people seemed a bit unsure about what the SPPA
is, so I thought I'd forward the mission statement - more contact
information should be in the signature at the end of this message.
***Mission statement***
The Scottish Postgraduate Philosophy Association is an organization
which aims to serve the needs of philosophy postgraduates in
Scotland. To this end, the SPPA organizes conferences, gathers and
redistributes details of visiting and other speakers and encourages
contact and communication between its members. The SPPA also
provides moral and financial support for independent initiatives that
will benefit the Scottish Postgraduate Community as a whole.
And that really should more than enough from me for one mail...
-Sophie (SPPA caretaker)
