Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, June 20th-22nd 2001
organized by the Philosophy Department of the Vrije Universiteit
and the 'Center for Epistemology and Ontology'
About the conference:
According to the received view, a person's belief is 'basic' just in
case it is not evidentially based on other beliefs that person
has. Many philosophers have held that some of our perceptual,
moral, mathematical, aesthetic, and religious beliefs are basic
beliefs. But can these views be adequately defended? Do we need
to
hypothesize distinct faculties of the mind that produce basic
beliefs of these kinds? What is the relation of basic beliefs to the
concepts we have? Are there a priori basic beliefs? What role do
intuitions have in the formation of basic beliefs? And can we form
basic beliefs by virtue of our reading literature? These, and other
related questions, are the theme of the present conference.
The conference will focus on four major areas of
epistemology: moral
epistemology, epistemology of mathematics, religious epistemology
and
literature as a source of knowledge. Each major area will be
represented
by one of the keynote speakers: Plantinga on religious
epistemology, Bob
Hale on mathematical epistemology, Dancy on moral epistemology
and Antonaccio on literature as a source of knowledge. Of course
papers
on
general epistemology dealing with the issue of basic beliefs are
very
welcome as well.
The conference is organized by René van Woudenberg, Sabine
Roeser, Terence Cuneo, Ron Rood and Mariëtte Willemsen.
Paper abstracts should be submitted before February 1st 2001
