It's available for a wide variety of systems (Mac/Windows/Linux)
and very handy after becoming used to it.
Especially for critical ed. there are packages like ncctools which
support a multiple footnote aparatus
Languages available are semitic (hebrew, arabic) greek, mongolian, etc,
even Klingon if you wish to edit some Klingon opera...
