THE MODERN HUMANITIES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION
Publications Fund
The Modern Humanities Research Association intends to set aside
annually a substantial sum for subsidizing scholarly publications in
the field of the modern and medieval European literature and
languages (including English) which, by their nature, could not
expect to be financially self-supporting.
Applications must be addressed to the Honorary Secretary [address
below] and accompanied by the following:
1. One copy of the manuscript in its final form.
2. One copy of a summary of the content of the work not exceeding
500 words in length.
3. A reasoned statement from the publisher who has agreed to
undertake publication subject to the provision of a subsidy. This
statement must include:-
a detailed estimate of printing and production costs (including
plates, diagrams, indexes, cover, paper, binding, etc.);
the intended retail and net selling price of the work;
anticipated receipts for the first two years after publication;
the royalty arrangements proposed.
4. A statement of any application made for subsidy from another
source, with results where known.
5. A curriculum vitae and list of other publications with full
bibliographical details.
Application for a subsidy will imply acceptance inter alia of the
following conditions, which will be incorporated in a formal
agreement between the Association and the publisher.
1. The Association shall normally lay down that the subsidy granted
shall be repayable by the publisher in proportion to sales, once the
latter reached a specified level. In all cases any royalties arising
from a subsidized publication shall be paid to the Association, and
not to the author or authors, until such time as the subsidy has
been paid in full. The publisher will be required to furnish a detailed
annual statement of sales and royalties.
Amounts due to the Association will be payable annually on 31
March.
2. A subsidy shall not normally be paid until the work concerned
has been printed and published, and until a statement of the printing
and production costs actually incurred, and of the final retail and net
price, has been received by the Association.
3. The publisher will be required to inform the Association without
delay of any subsidy from another source not disclosed (or not
listed as granted) in the original application.
4. The publisher will be expected to adhere closely to the stated
date of publication, although this rule may be relaxed in exceptional
cases.
5. Major changes in a work already approved for subsidy shall be
made only with the agreement of the Association.
6. The reverse of the title page of the work subsidized shall bear the
imprint 'Printed and published with the assistance of the Modern
Humanities Research Association'.
7. Three copies of each work subsidized shall be supplied to the
Association free of charge.
