PLEASE SAVE THIS MESSAGE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE -
IT CONTAINS IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Welcome to german-studies.
This list was launched in September 1998 as an initiative of the
Conference of University Teachers of German in Great Britain and
Ireland (CUTG). Its aim is twofold:
- to serve as a bulletin board. It advertises the activities of the
CUTG, but also carries any other relevant calls for papers and
contributions, announcements of conferences and lectures, jobs
and publications, internet resources, etc.
- to serve as a general forum for discussing matters relating to
research and teaching in any field of German Studies. Its remit in
this sense is as broad as the subject has now become in UK and
Irish universities.
Please feel free to post to the list announcements, queries or
material for discussion (in English or German). More substantial
reports and other documents of longer-term value may be sent to
the list owner and will be made available for retrieval by other
members of the list. Details on posting to the list and list owner are
given below.
Enjoy the list, and please advertise it in your institution.

Joint Honorary Secretary, CUTG

Netiquette
=================================================
General guidelines on using JISCmail lists are available at the
following web address:
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/docs/
Salient points include:
- Respect people's privacy
Please do not post private e-mail to the list without the permission
of the author of the message. It violates their copyright, and could
expose you to civil and/or criminal liability. It's also not nice.
- Don't quote an entire message when replying
When replying to a message, it is a good idea to quote part of the
original message, so people reading your reply know the context.
However, quoting the entire message is unnecessary, as everyone
on the list will have received a copy of the original message. If your
own contribution is smaller than what you're quoting, you're probably
quoting too much.
- Don't send attachments to JISCmail lists
Some e-mail programs can send non-text files, such as word-
processed documents or computer programs, via e-mail. These are
called attachments. You shouldn't normally send attachments to
JISCmail lists: a lot of people will be unable to read them, either
because their e-mail program can't decode them, or because they
don't have the right word-processing software to read them after they
have been decoded. You should also be aware that a lot of people
receive e-mail on a central computer, where storage space is
limited, and an attached file can mean they run out of space and
cannot receive any more e-mail.
Instead of sending attachments, you could do one of the following:
- Send a message to the list offering to post an attached file to
anyone who wants a copy (sending attachments to an individual is
acceptable)
- Put the file on your local web or ftp server and post the URL to the
list
- If the file is small, copy the text into your e-mail message.
Everyone can read plain text messages.
- Ask the list owner to store the file at JISCmail.
Some e-mail programs can send encoded messages, which are
unreadable until decoded, and some can format your e-mail as an
HTML page. Please turn these options OFF before sending
messages to JISCmail.
_________________
As far as the german-studies list in particular is concerned, please
note that the list is set for 'reply to sender'. This means that if
you reply to a message which you receive from the list using your
e-mail program's automatic 'reply' function, your reply will be
addressed not to the list as a whole but to the individual who posted
the message (unless they have overridden the default setting). If you
want your reply to go to the whole list, make sure that it is
addressed to

=================================================
Problems!
=================================================
o Never send commands, or requests to join, or admin. queries, to
[log in to unmask] - your problem will be broadcast to
all our members!
o If your mail address changes, send a message to
[log in to unmask]
o If something goes wrong - perhaps you get two copies of
every message - send a message to
[log in to unmask]
o If mail from german-studies to you is regularly rejected for
some reason (perhaps because you have run out of file space
or your computer mail service has been renamed) the
list owner may eventually delete you from the list.
o If you get no mail, you may have been deleted from the
list - see above. Either send a message to
[log in to unmask], or resubscribe.
