We would like to invite you to attend the two following talks in room
A155.
Both talks will commence at 5.15 p.m.
Tuesday 14 November: Ms Sonat Hart, a researcher from the Oxford
Centre, will give a talk entitled 'From Talmud to Torberg'
Sonat Hart, a graduate of Earlham College, Indiana, is studying for
the Post-Graduate Diploma in Jewish Studies at the Oxford Centre
for Hebrew and Jewish Studies. During her tenure of the Thomas J.
Watson Fellowship (1995-6) she undertook research on
'Contemporary German and Austrian Jewish Life and Literature. She
will shortly be completing a doctoral dissertation at King's College
London on the Austrian writer Friedrich Torberg, relating his work, in
part, to the Austrian-Jewish dialogue. The humorous writings of
Torberg's 'Tante Jolesch' series will form the subject of her talk at
Sussex.
Wednesday 6 December: Professor Wolfgang Benz will give a talk
on 'Jewish Life in Germany after 1945'
Professor Benz is the Director of the Centre for Antisemitism
Studies at the Technical University Berlin and the chair of the
German Exile Studies organisation Gesellschaft für Exilforschung.
He has published numerous books on the history of the Jews during
the Third Reich including The Jews of Germany 1933-1945. His
most recent book is entitled The Holocaust: A Short History (Profile,
London 2000).
We look forward to seeing you.
