The message which follows is posted on behalf of John Grocott
who is away from Kingston until 11th November and is temporarily
unsubscribed from the list.
European Union of Geosciences (EUG XI), Strasbourg, 8th - 12th
April 2001, Symposium on: "DEFORMATION AT CONVERGENT
MARGINS". Call for abstracts for oral or poster contributions.
Convenors: John Grocott (Kingston), Ken McCaffrey (Durham),
Graeme Taylor (Plymouth) and Basil Tikoff (Wisconsin).
Abstract deadline: 1 December 2000. Abstracts should be
submitted via the world-web web at
http://www.campublic.co.uk/EUG/XI/submission.html
Information about the meeting is available at the EUG website

Dear colleagues,
Hiding away in the list of "other symposia" in the EUG XI second
circular you will find the title "Deformation at Convergent Margins"
(symposium L5).
John Grocott, Ken McCaffrey, Graeme Taylor, and Basil Tikoff
would like to invite contributions to this symposium. In broad terms
we have in mind focusing on deformation in the overriding plate at
advancing and retreating subduction boundaries where oceanic
lithosphere is subducted below a continent, although contributions
about oceanic subduction systems will also be welcome. We are
hoping to receive contributions on the following topics:
(1) partitioned transpression and transtension in the upper plate at
convergent boundaries (including the role of vertical axis block
rotation (paleomagnetically-determined) in deformation
partitioning); (2) the role of pluton emplacement in accomodating
upper plate deformation; (3) the nature and structure of the
detachment horizons that underlie domains of partitioned
transpression; (4) rates and plate tectonic processes in
convergent margins, including the relationship between relative
plate vectors at the subduction boundary and deformation in the
overriding plate, (5) deep crustal structure and modelling (seismic
reflection and refraction studies, critical wedge theory, importance
of inheritance in determining crustal structure), (6) mineralisation
and its relation to structure of the upper plate at convergent
boundaries (Kiruna-type magnetite apatite, Olympic dam-type Fe-
oxide- Cu- Au) and copper porphyry deposits).
If the symposium proves popular, and attracts sufficient high-quality
contributions, authors will have the opportunity to submit
manuscripts to a Geological Society of London Special Publication
on Deformation at Convergent Margins, which we have already
planned in outline with the Geological Society. We would like to
hear from would-be contributors to the symposium, and others, if
they are interested in contributing a manuscript for international
peer-review to such a volume, and would be able to do so to a
deadline of June 2001.
