Hi. I'm embarking on a project for which I want to track eye movements of
musicians as they sit at a synthesizer keyboard and read and play sheet music
(displayed on a computer screen). I'm looking for (a) advice on what hardware
to buy and/or (b) info on anyone who might be selling relevant hardware used
and/or (c) pointers to people who might already have tried something along
these lines.
This will obviously need to be a headmounted tracker. My questions are mostly
about the extent to which the data can be processed automatically, that is,
how good the resolution is on head mounted trackers if I want the computer to
convert to screen coordinates rather than just giving me the video record.
Suppose we put a big computer screen on top of the keyboard, where the music
stand would usually go, and display standard music notation at standard size
(e.g., published piano music). Can we get accuracy down to the particular note
head that's at the center of fixation (if any)? That would typically require
finer vertical than horizontal resolution, I think, but I haven't tried to
work out what this would be in degrees of visual angle.
Anyone know of any software that's the equivalent for music notation of stuff
that tells you which character position is fixated in reading?
I gather some headmounted systems calibrate their position relative to the
display screen via LEDs around the screen--is that the best way to go? Can
these be easily added to any generic computer monitor? And more generally, are
there any problems associated with tracking subjects who are watching flat
screen displays? For various reasons this would be much preferable to a CRT.
How much should I expect to pay for a tracking system to do this?
Thanks much.
