Dear Andrew McIntosh,
Thank you for your interest. As part of a previously SHEFC funded project we
have a desktop video conferencing suite (DVC) installed at QMUC. This
facility has been used to promote groupwork activities between students in
Glasgow and QMUC where they work on case study problems and share resources,
i.e. documents, whiteboards facilities etc. we have had this facility in
operation for two years and have developed expertise in using DVC. This
project is not EMB related. We want to expand the use of the facility to
other students within QMUC.
We would like to promote this technology to encourage students to reflect
and evaluate research articles following (EBM) guidelines as part of a
groupwork activity. We think that students can gain valuable transferable
skills in groupwork and would become more aware of the potentials of
telemedicine IF this reflection was done by groups of students located in
different places (cities, countries etc.) communicating via video
conferencing.
My ideas here are tentative but here they go...
I would therefore like to develop a cooperative arrangement by which
students in several institutions and possibly as part of their assessment
would retrieve and analyse research documents following EMC guidelines. The
retrieval and analysis could be framed within a case study scenario. The
analysis would be posted within a joint e-distribution list so toher
students would have a chance at looking at the material posted. the students
that developed the analysis would then present their analyss via video
conferecning (like a mini conference presentation) and discuss with the
students of other insitutions the relevance of their retrieval practices and
the pertinence of the analysis. Hopefully a discussion would then develop
involving all the students in the participating institutions.
I have not developed the ideas fully, so I am open to suggestions from
anyone who has had experience in this type fo thing.

Dear V Cano
I am a lecturer in Psychiatry at the University of Edinburgh, I teach EBM to
under and postgraduates. The university, and this department in particular
is developing video-teaching for other centres in Scotland.
The conferencing element is not up and running as yet. I'd be interested to
hear what you have planned and if I can be of any help, please contact me.

Hello, I am a new member to this list. I teach the subject of information
retrieval and Evidence based medicine within the MSC in health informatics
at Queen Margaret University College in Edinburgh. I am looking for
collegues who also teach EBM and who are interested in developing a teaching
approach that encourages group-work, the use of desktop video conferencing
and/or e-conference discussion lists as communication media to encourage
students to engage in critical reflection and analysis of EBM research
articles.
Thanks you
