PEOPLING THE PERIPHERY: RUSSIAN SETTLERS IN EURASIA
Call for Papers
A workshop on the theme of "Peopling the 'Periphery:' Russian Settlers
in
Eurasia" will be held at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, on
September 29-30, 2001. This multi-disciplinary workshop will explore
the
policies, practices, cultural representations, and daily-life
experiences of
Slavic settlement in non-Russian regions of Eurasia from the Muscovite
period to the recent past. The movement of Slavic settlers was a
central
component of Russian empire-building and of the everyday life of
numerous
social groups, especially the peasantry, yet it remains relatively
understudied. This workshop seeks to redress this lacuna through a
multi-dimensional exploration of the topic that will both reintegrate
and
reinterrogate the varied meanings and dynamics of Slavic settlement in
Eurasian history. Themes will include, but are not limited to:
· State policies relating to borderland settlement, including exile
· Patterns and processes of settlement
· Relations between settlers and indigenous peoples
· Colonization and the environment
· Comparative dynamics of borderland settlement: temporal and regional
comparison both within the former Russian empire and with other
empires broadly conceived.
· Issues of social status, ethnicity, confession, gender, family
formation
and the relationship among them
· Cultural representations and meanings of settlement
Article-length papers will be read in advance and discussed in an
informal
yet intensive workshop setting. Those interested in presenting a paper
should submit three copies of a one-page proposal, along with a brief
c.v.,
to Nick Breyfogle [[log in to unmask], Dept. of History, The Ohio State
University, 106 Dulles Hall, 230 W. 17th Ave, Columbus, OH 43210-1367,
or
fax: 614-292-2282] before January 15, 2001. Those who wish to
participate
in the discussion sessions should contact one of the organizers (Nick
Breyfogle, Abby Schrader ([log in to unmask]), or Willard Sunderland
([log in to unmask])). We encourage proposals from a variety of
academic
disciplines and on topics related to all regions of the former Russian
empire. Although funding for this workshop is pending, we hope to
provide
travel and lodging expenses for paper givers. We intend to publish
these
papers as a collection of essays.
