=============================

=============================
ESRC DSA Residential workshop details:
Nov. 28-30, 2000
What is the Workshop? It is a three-day session on
policy-relevant research methodologies. It has outside
funding from the ESRC and a subsidy from the DSA. All
the techniques discussed emerge from Development
Studies and related disciplines. Three workshops have
been held successfully in 1998 and 1999.
Where is it and When? We begin at 9 am on Tuesday 28
November 2000, and we finish at 2 pm onThursday, 30
November. The workshop is at the Development and
Project Planning Centre, Pemberton Building,
University of Bradford. Lunch each day is free to
participants, and two Workshop dinners will be funded
from the Workshop funds (Tuesday evening and Wednesday
evening), to which speakers and participants are
cordially invited.
Who is it For? 2nd, 3rd and 4th year PhD students in
Development Studies or cognate disciplines such as
Geography, Politics, or Economics. You will have to
join the DSA. (To register, request details via Linda
Curry, DSA, International Development Department,
University of Birmingham (http://www.bham.ac.uk/DSA/).
Participants are expected to be in the DSA Research
Students Study Group – or to register for it by
contacting the DSA directly (see below for details).
The DSA gives support to numerous scientific research
groups of which the Research Students’ Study Group is
a flexible email-based network grouping. Like the
other Study Groups, the students’ group is encouraged
to meet 2 or 3 times a year, and the Workshop is one
of the assisted meetings for the year 2000.
The DSA Conference on 4 Nov. 2000 is another special
meeting date for the Research Students’ Study Group.
See www.bham.ac.uk/dsa for details.
What will it Cost? The workshop fee is just £10 and
you will receive reimbursement for all your travel
expenses (2nd class rail + taxi), accommodation for up
to three nights Please answer all the questions below
if you are planning to attend, and return a copy of
this form to the coordinators (address below). The £10
fee for all participants cannot be waived .If you pay
the fee by cheque, your registration is immediately
guaranteed. However if you register and then find that
you cannot come, we require you to inform us with six
days’ notice. Otherwise the £10 fee will be due,
because we will be arranging catering for which we
will have to pay.
WHO SHOULD I THANK FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY?
The Economic and Social Research Council of the UK
finances a number of summer schools and workshops of
this kind. See www.esrc.ac.uk for details of
Post-Graduate Training. The ESRC subsidises the
Workshop as a DSA activity. Staff supporting the
workshop are either volunteering or earning a small
daily honorarium. Supervisors strongly encourage their
students to go to this Workshop which complements the
usual doctoral training programmes. The Workshop is
specific to the needs and approaches of Development
Studies students. It is inter-disciplinary but
recognises the disciplines from which students arrive
at Doctoral level Development Studies research. Anyone
is welcome (including NGO staff, donor agency staff,
and free-lance consultants), but unless you are a UK
student you will not receive the ESRC subsidy.
Everyone must pay the £10 fee.
HOW TO BOOK ACCOMMODATION:
B&Bs are accessible via the University of Bradford’s
web site, www.bradford.ac.uk. You may also choose the
Youth Hostel at Haworth which has regular bus services
to the centre of Bradford. As soon as you register, we
will send out suggestions for specific B&Bs which
participants may wish to use.
