Daniel, I think your questions, although voiced before, are very worthy of
discussion, especially on this list. But then again, I, too, am a newcomer
to this working group, and in fact to librarianship, having just graduated
last June.
This is my understanding of the issues you raise. I hope other list members
will jump in with their comments, as their experience and perspective are
invaluable to the newbies.
I don't believe DC was ever intended to replace MARC; it's simply a
situation where DC is more suited to describing Internet resources, and
thereby making them more easily discoverable. MARC and AACR2 remain the most
sophistocated system for describing "traditional library materials." If I've
got that notion wrong, please, please correct me!
There is also the issue of the time it takes to create a MARC record in
comparison to the time it takes to create a DC record. (Remember what Martin
Dillon talked about.) With the efficiency of a simple DC record, comes some
loss of comprehensiveness, but I think it is an issue of some access is
better than no access at all.
One of the issues that was talked about in the w/g meeting at DC-8 was
whether DC records belong in OPACS. I'd like to hear more about that
discussion!
And by the way, DC community, thanks for being so welcoming to the
newcomers!

Subject: DC and MARC
I'm a recent addition to the librarian's group and was
fortunate enough to attend DC8 in Ottawa. Although
I've worked with Dublin Core elements over the past
few years I'm only now taking a serious look at its
use in relation to MARC (most of my effort has been
towards search return and schema design). I'm
attempting to bring myself up to speed on the various
issues related to this topic: both its pros and cons.
If anyone has any resources they could direct me to or
have materials, comments, or opinions related to this
issue I would be very appreciative. Some specific
questions I'm looking at are:
Is DC in compatible with MARC functions?
In what ways?
Are certain fields and qualifiers in DC more
applicable to traditional cataloging needs than
others?
What is the opinion of the DC community regarding
cataloging of electronic records (was Dublin Core
originally conceived as an alternative to MARC)?
What is the general consensus of the Librarian's
Working Group for using DC for cataloging?
Thank you,
Daniel Scott Angel Ph.D.
