A classification scheme is a formalised schema or ontology or even you could
say a language for the representation of subjects in a structured way
conforming to the grammar and syntax of that language.
The Library and Information Science community has evolved over the last
hundred and odd years theories, expertise, tools and techniques in this
area.Classification helps retrieve relevant documents more efficiently and
effectively.
Following are some examples of general classification schemes:
Dewey Decimal Classification( DDC is perhaps the most popular world over and
also the most easily recognised)
Library of Congress Classification scheme
Universal Classification Scheme( for a very detailed one)
Other than the above, there are many a domain specific specialised ones that
have been developed.
Let me narrate here an interesting experience that I had at the recent ASIS
& T Annual Conference at Chicago on Nov. 14th. I met a computer science
professional who was advocating that we need to develop a formalised subject
representation scheme, and he was so thrilled to know that LIS community has
already done so....
So What I feel is we need to 'inform' the INTERNET community about the
availability of the classification schemes and let them make 'informed
decisions' about the use of their choice of schemes.
