Following suggestions from the U.S. Department of Education's Internet
Working Group (IWG) and the National Center for Education Statistics
(NCES), I revised the level of education element values proposed for
the ED Web site. An updated version of the mapping that Stuart
referenced is available at <http://inet.ed.gov/~kstubbs/levelofed.pdf>.
The revision splits GEM's two-valued treatment of higher education into
four values:
- Less than Two Year Postsecondary
- Two Year College
- Undergraduate Education
- Graduate Education
The terms mapped to those elements are listed in a column named "User
Vocabulary" but are derived from a number of sources:
- Search logs for www.ed.gov for March-April 2000 (6,000 most frequent
search criteria)
- Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors (12th Edition - Educational Level and Age
Level Terms
- Gateway to Educational Materials (GEM) - Grade Element
