Subject: Closure of British Council offices in Germany <fwd>
Dear All,
You may already have heard of plans by the British Council to
close four of its regional offices in Germany as part of an
international programme of restructuring. This would leave only the
Berlin office as BC's presence in Germany.
The proposed changes seriously reduce the British Council's
commitment to Germany and to a regional view of Europe, and call
into doubt its ability to deliver the services and programmes it says
it wants to introduce as part of the changes. They would also
increase the likelihood of the closure of the Goethe Institut's
Manchester office.
Below is part of a press release protesting at the plans and
publicising a statement, in German and English, which interested
parties are encouraged to sign. Please take a few minutes to visit
the Bayreuth website and add your voice to support the texts under the
Bayreuth Appeal link.

I will draft a letter for approval by the GSLG Committee to express
our dismay over these plans.
Thank you.
