UNIVERSITY OF SALZBURG
Department of English and American Studies
CONFERENCE: CALL FOR PAPERS
TALE, NOVELLA, SHORT STORY:
CURRENTS IN SHORT FICTION
SALZBURG 1-4 November 2001
Organised on behalf of the Department of English and American
Studies, University of Salzburg, by Wolfgang Goertschacher and
Holger Klein
Deadline: 10 January 2001
This conference addresses two main concerns. On the one hand,
we are looking for contributions of a centrally theoretical slant:
papers exploring the applicability to short fiction of methods and
approaches evolved for dealing with the novel, in particular studies
in narratology, or papers offering contributions to a typology of
short narrative forms, including perhaps considerations of long short
stories or 'novellas' as distinct from novels and more typical short
stories, or contributions to a general theory of short fiction. On the
other hand, there is room for papers dealing with any aspect of short
fiction in English from the Middle English period to the present,
emphasizing either links to short fiction in other countries or the
significance of the particular subject chosen for the development of
the short prose narrative over time, or both. It seems to us that,
especially in recent times, most energy in research has been devoted
to the novel as the major form, which is right and proper of course,
but that there is a case for renewed intensive exploration of the
shorter varieties of fiction and reviewing theoretical positions in
that field.
We are looking for around 25 participants, not all of whom may wish to
offer a paper, some may just want to participate in the discussions.
The conference will be organised in 90-minute sessions, each with two
papers. Papers must not exceed 30 minutes delivery time (corresponding
to around 8-10 pages of text), and every paper will be followed by 15
minutes discussion time. As all participants will be housed and take
meals at the St Virgil Educational Centre, situated there will be
ample opportunity to continue discussions informally outside the
sessions.
The conference will begin at 3 p.m. on Thursday, 1 November
2001.The total cost will be ca. ATS 3200 including the conference fee
and three days' full board and lodging: from Thursday, 1 November
after lunch to Sunday, 4 November after lunch. In some cases the
organisers may be able to offer some financial assistance, but
intending participants should in the first place apply to their home
institutions for funding. Participants are expected to stay for the
entire duration of the conference and are requested to plan their
journey accordingly. Participants may arrive earlier and/or leave
later, and the same extremely favourable rates will apply for the
additional days as the conference package. All payments, including
those for possible additional stays, will be made directly to the
organisers, either in advance (banking information supplied on
request) or on arrival.
