Dear Maria,
Chest physiotherapy (lung PT) has been practised for a very long time. There
two schcool of thoughts, those who are proponents and other are opponents.
There are a lot of papers published in favour of manual chest percussion.
Gallon (1992) demonstrated that fast manual chest persussions are better in
sputum mobilisation than slow percussion. It has also been shown that manual
chest percussion without postural dranage are less effective.
You need to choose your patients carefully for manual chest percussion:
Whose with acute secretion retention
Whose who produce execessive secretions (at least 30 ml a day)
In stable condition (Though Webber et al showed that chest physiotherapy
(including amnual chest percussion) are not harmful to patient.)
If you are interested in references, I have a lot with me.

Subject: Lung- PT
I agree with you Isaac. I work in Sweden as a lung-PT. Here we donīt learn a
thing about manual chest percussion anymore. They teach us that itīs "old
knowledge". Maybe there are some in Sweden still performing it. I donīt
know.
Do you perform it? In case you or someone else does, please tell me a little
about it. In some cases it might be helpful. Iīm interested in any
information
that could help me in my work with lungpatients. I just got started and need
all help I can get. :)
Maria
