Dear All,
Interesting as this discussion on the rights and wrongs of a
single sentence may be, my understanding is that this list is for the
discussion of issues relating to disabilities and research and thinking
within that specific area. Unless we are going to suggest that
homosexuality and marriage are disabling conditions, I am not sure that the
current discussion is wholly appropriate. There are many listserve
discussions within which people can explore and work out the issues that
are dominating our current discussion. It strikes me that this is not the
place for such discussion, unless, the argument relates to the subject
matter of the list. At the moment it does not. Can I request that we move
on and continue to discuss some of the very important issues that have
emerged recently within the area of disability and disability studies
which, sadly, have not generated anything like as much interest and
excitement. I also share the concerns of a previous post, about the rather
aggressive tones of some postings. It would worry me that within a forum
designed to encourage communication and collegiality, people feel inhibited
about communicating due to the fear of what kind of response they may
receive. That is a significant problem that has to be addressed. This is
NOT a hostile email, simply a plea for us to return to that which this
list was designed for.
Best Wishes
John
