I received the two emails below that raised some questions for me regarding
the presidential election in US. Let me first say, that I'm not a
supporter of Bush and I'll not say who I do support unless asked. However,
the question has been raised that perhaps G.W. Bush has a learning
disability. I have no idea if he does or if he doesn't. But, I wonder if
our (US) fixation (as demonstrated below) fixation on his trouble with
pronouncing certain words reveals anything about our assumptions of
learning disability. If we assume that he has a learning disability, do we
think he could govern as effectively as any other? Should we question or
analyse his mispronunciations? Do we make assumptions about intellect
based on a person's speech patterns or physical appearance? I'm not sure
what assumptions, if any, I'm hearing...but the emails raised some
questions. Any thoughs? Best, Eric

I heard on the news this morning Bush saying (approximate here,
allowing for the in-exactness of my memory):
"Some say that tax cuts don't resignate with the voters. I think they will
find
on Tuesday that it does resignate with the voters."
When I heard him use "resignate" for "resonate" the first time I attributed it
to a slip of the tongue. But when he said it a second time, I realized
that he
just does not know the two words. Is there (not) a correlation between
vocabulary and basic intelligence? And could we count on a person to resign
from office who does not know the meaning of the word? The (rhetorical)
answer,
let us not elect him in the first place. There is nothing wrong with not
being
too bright. But, there is something wrong with electing someone who is not
too
bright!
Invite Bush out for a beer if you like him, but let us not, for goodness'
sake,
elect him president.
