Dear social-policy list members,
As some of you may be aware, the contract for UK academic e-mail list
service has been moved from mailbase (based at University of Newcastle)
to a new consortium based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in
Oxfordshire known as jiscmail. This means that some small, but
important, changes will impact on all mailbase lists. The official
changeover will take place this weekend, meaning there will be some
important differences in the way the list operates from next week
onwards.
Firstly, the address for the list will change to:
[log in to unmask]
Messages to the list will (from Monday) have to be sent to this address
rather than [log in to unmask] Messages sent to the old
address will, for a short period, be automatically re-routed to the new
address, and anyone sending a message to the old address will
automatically receive an e-mail reminding them of the changes.
Secondly, anyone wishing to join/leave the list, or wishing to suspend
messages from the list while away, will need to send their requests to:
[log in to unmask]
rather than the old [log in to unmask] Similarly, anyone wishing
to send a message to the list owner should address it to:
[log in to unmask]
rather than the old [log in to unmask] For those with
web access, full details of user commands can be found on the web at
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/docs/user-ref.htm
Hopefully, these changes should not cause any disruption to the list;
for the most part list users need only replace mailbase with jiscmail in
the address of their message. The technical specifics of the transfer
are being handled entirely by mailbase and jiscmail, so list members DO
NOT need to do anything in order to activate their membership of the new
jiscmail service.
Finally, one area where there may well be a noticeable difference is in
the web presence of the list (and all mailbase lists). This will be
moved to:
www.jiscmail.ac.uk
rather than the old www.mailbase.ac.uk. However, here the change may be
of more significance than a mere name change; the jiscmail service
promises the possibility of using a web-based interface to post messages
in addition to the normal e-mail route. Web based features will be added
to lists by jiscmail and list-owners over the coming weeks and I will
post full information of the new web based aspects of the list when
these are fully operational.
If all goes well, then the changeover should be pretty much invisible;
however, if list members find they are having difficulties with the new
service, please contact me directly ([log in to unmask]) to let me know
and I will explore the problem with jiscmail. Similarly, anyone with any
questions or concerns should feel free to contact me.
John Hudson,
social-policy list-owner.
