Okay, Ms. S. - Z., up to a point I'm with you, that Ren. rhetoric
experience was eroticized. But surely too, Ren. erotic experience was
rhetoricized, i. e. the stock erotic rhetoric of Roman poetry and even
more of Petrarch and his followers did plenty to determine the nature and
content of erotic experience. I'm sure it also allowed plenty of people
to write about erotic experiences without actually having had any. A
specialized case of the general dictum that people wouldn't fall in love
if they hadn't read about it.
