Dear PILAS Members
Hello! A belated introduction to encourage the others.
My name is Charlotte Hursey and I am currently a postgrad research student
in the Department of Peace Studies in the University of Bradford.
A long time ago I studied Anthropology, French and Spanish for a first
degree at the University of Durham, with the intention of working in Latin
America…I then worked in the voluntary sector : primarily in rural
community development in England, then for two years with a local NGO in
Cambodia and on my return with the Chilean community in South Yorkshire.
Well, too many years later I am now trying to combine interests with
fieldwork in Chile. My research is around local NGOs/community organisations
in remoter rural areas: particularly perceptions and portrayal of their
management needs and competence in relation to concepts of ‘capacity
building’ in the development agenda. This links into other debates around
the roles of international and local NGOs ‘post democratisation’ and the
role of civil society at the peripheries of the state/market.
I would be pleased to hear from other postgrads interested in these issues
generally, in NGOs/community organisations and of course in Chile. I am
keen to identify any research especially 'grey' research
that has taken an ethnographic
approach to the study of local organisations – obviously in Chile but
elsewhere too as it seems thin on the ground.
