I have a question for the mailbase. I am a 1st year physio student and I
haven't learned about the knee yet. Hopefully some treatment ideas can be
provided (I don't have time to be broken)!!. As a weekend warrior, I went
out today and played 4 vs. 4 volleyball. It was the last hit of the game. In
the air, I felt my knee pop out of alignment and upon landing I experienced
a squishy feeling. After hitting the ground (hard) I was able to bend the
knee through almost full ROM however I felt a bit of numbness in my
gastroc/soleus. 4 hours later, there is no longer numbness in the calf
muscles. Main complaint is stiffness.
I have been icing the joint almost every other hour for 20-30 mins. but
definite swelling is evident.
Limited AROM flexion - limited by tightness on lateral aspect of joint
Limited PROM flexion- limited by a thick-like endfeel (perhaps caused by
edema)
Pain on full AROM extension
Pain on full PROM extension
Little or no pain with isometric resisted ROM
Pain when palpating lateral aspect of knee
Any differential diagnosis would be appreciated as well as treatment plan.
So far this evening, other than ice, I have been doing isometric exercises
and trying to complete full range extension.
Looking forward to your replies,
Assunta
