I am not sure whether you have noticed, but three of IE's flagship
journals (J Ind Ecol, Int J LCA and J Cleaner Prod) are not part of
ISI's important databases. This means that students for example here at
the Industrial Ecology Programme in Trondheim, or those using melvyl at
the University of California, don't find articles in these journals when
they do their term projects or thesis. It also means that those of us
who publish in these journals miss an important part of our potential
readership.
Maybe most importantly, our work is not counted in the important
compilations of how productive and how frequently cited certain
disciplines, institutes, or individual researchers are. Our literature
looks like grey literature. This tarnishes the standing of IE as a
scientific discipline (or enterprise). It is a career risk for young
investigators to publish primarily or exclusively in these journals,
because it may impact their chance of landing a job with a good
university.
So we need to get 'our' scientific journals into ISI!
To do this, following things help:
1. Publish also in well-recognized scientific journals, and cite papers
in these three journals.
2. Ensure a high quality through good work and tough peer review.
3. Timely publication.
4. Getting our libraries to buy, and archive, the journals.
5. Recommending the journals to ISI. You can do this via their web site,
http://www.isinet.com/isi/hot/essays/199701, or send a fax to
+1-215-386-6362.
