Brunel University, UK
Department of Information Systems and Computing
PhD Studentship in
INTERFACE DESIGN, MOBILE/DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING AND WORKPLACE STUDIES
*** Mobile Work and Mobile Computing ***
We are seeking applicants for a PhD student to research into the
highly topical area of Mobile Work and Mobile Computing. This is a
three year, EPSRC funded studentship investigating the nature and
demands of mobile work with the aim of developing technology to
support mobile users. Recent changes and convergence in mobile and
wireless technology (Bluetooth, increasing bandwidth, WAP,
location-based services, and so on) have meant that technology in
this area is developing extremely rapidly, yet there has been little
focus on the users and usability. We will address these issues by
performing user studies, involving ourselves in development and
making a real contribution to design through our industrial partner.
We seek applications from candidates who have at least a good upper
second class degree. They may be technically oriented, in the area of
computer science or information systems (or a related discipline), or
human-centred, from the cognitive or social sciences. Technically
oriented candidates with some experience of social science research
methods or social scientists with experience of technology
development will be particularly welcomed, as will applicants with a
Masters degree.
The studentship covers a maintenance grant of £8,500p.a. and tuition
fees, with the opportunity of undertaking additional paid
undergraduate teaching. There is a substantial budget available for
purchasing mobile/communications technology, training and attending
international conferences.
The starting date will be no later than December 2000, although we
would prefer to begin the project earlier than this.
Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Mark Perry:

APPLICATION DETAILS
Candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Those
interested in applying should send a c.v. including three referees
and covering letter to:
Mark Perry,
DISC,
Brunel University,
Uxbridge,
Middlesex,
UB8 3PH, UK.
FURTHER PARTICULARS
The successful candidate will work closely with the members of the
Centre for Research into the Information Environment
(http://www.brunel.ac.uk/research/ie).
The aims of this research are primarily to:
* Develop methods and analysis tools to investigate mobile work and
conduct a field study of mobile technology in use;
* Identify mobile workers' communicative, informational and
technological requirements;
* Investigate how technology can be effectively designed to support
the needs of mobile users (integrating and developing existing HCI
and CSCW techniques);
* Develop and evaluate prototype applications and devices that are
appropriate for the requirements of their users.
The project involves a collaboration between Brunel and Symbian Ltd.
<http://www.symbian.com>, who will provide additional access to
technology, technical guidance and training. Symbian are involved in
developing an operating system for mobile telephones and wireless
information devices, and as such are in a unique position to extend
this research into practical developments.
MORE INFORMATION
For further details, applicants are invited to examine the details of
the research proposal which can be found at:

THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Information Systems and Computing at Brunel
University is a dynamic, growing department with a commitment to high
quality research. Situated in West London, we are one of the largest
and foremost departments of Information Systems in Europe, with 35
full-time teaching staff and over 800 students in our various
programmes.
We are also a multi- and inter-disciplinary department. Our belief is
that systems design should be sensitive to the detailed requirements
of the application area, the personal and social contexts of use, and
to the engineering required to create robust software. Our focus on
application-oriented research aims to create a symbiotic relationship
between issues, technique, methods and the uses of software.
