Research Associate in Visual Interaction
A Research Associate is required to join a team for one year on an EPSRC
funded project considering new paradigms for visual interaction. This
project is investigating the question of what alternatives are available to
the use of user interface metaphor when directly manipulating computer
abstractions. It has already resulted in a number of novel programming tools
specialised for domains such as end user programming, visual languages and
home automation. Work on the project so far has involved both cognitive
science and experimental psychology methods as well as ethnographic
observation, interviews, and implementation of prototype systems in
collaboration with other researchers in Cambridge and elsewhere.
The current vacancy is for a programmer who will work on the development of
radical new programming systems and user interfaces. There will be
considerable opportunity to influence both the system design and the
research objectives of the project.
The successful applicant will have very good programming and object oriented
design skills, especially in Java and C++. Experience of graphics
programming and artificial intelligence techniques will be necessary.
Previous research experience is not required, though experience of Bayesian
inference methods and/or cognitive modelling would be an advantage.
Salary will be in the range of £16,775-£25,213 per annum, depending on age
and qualifications.
Further information about the project is available at the Vital Signs
project page (http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~afb21/vital/index.html), or can be
obtained from Dr Peter Robinson (E-mail: [log in to unmask]) or Dr Alan
Blackwell (E-mail: [log in to unmask]).
Applications containing a current curriculum vitae and the names of at least
two referees should be sent to Ms C Bean, Computer Laboratory, Pembroke
Street, Cambridge, CB2 3QG to arrive no later than Monday 30 October 2000.
