This way of thinking is also very common in environmental archaeology.
The first exercise I get my students to do is to write the "Biography
of an Ecofact". In Evans & O'Connor (1999) Environmental Archaeology
(Sutton) there is a short chapter entitled from "death to burial"
which includes 2 flow diagrams, one for an ecofact, the other for a
pot. Close comparison of these can lead to many happy hours of
discussion!
