Two research posts are available in slightly different areas that require
candidates with skills in law and Artificial Intelligence. The closing
dates are October 15th and October 19th - apologies for short notice.
Interviews will be held soon after the closing dates.

forms 11a and 17 that you need.

The starting dates for the posts will depend on the availability of whoever
is appointed, but the first post is expected to start as soon as possible,
whereas the seconde one is expected to start early next year.

N.B. Although both posts state a requirement for a knowledge of  Java,
candidates who have little or no Java experience but can demonstrate a good
aptitude for programming languages are encouraged to apply.



RESEARCH APPOINTMENT: WEB-BASED DECISION
SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR DIVORCE LAWYERS

This is a 1-year research appointment within the Faculty of Law to work on
design and development of a prototype web-based decision support system
that will aid lawyers in handling divorce cases.

You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the
ability and desire to work within a collaborative research team as well as
having a high degree of self-motivation. You should either have experience
of programming Artificial Intelligence systems, or experience in
object-oriented programming and/or writing programs capable of being
accessed over the Internet. An understanding of law, and legal authority,
would be an advantage. A familiarity with HTML is essential for this job,
and experience with one or more of
the following technologies would be desirable: programming rule-based
"expert systems", Java programming, intranet development, or human-computer
interfaces. Application development skills (requirements engineering,
knowledge acquisition, and system implementation) would also be an asset.

Salary scale: £16,775 - £20,465 p.a.

UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH,  GLASGOW CALEDONIAN UNIVERSITY

CENTRE FOR FORENSIC STATISTICS AND LEGAL REASONING

                        Director and 3 Research Fellows

[N.B. We're particulary looking for research fellows with experience in AI
and, preferably, some familiarity with either law or statistics. The other
posts are still open, however.]


This is an exciting new collaborative venture involving two universities, a
forensic science laboratory and four disciplines (law, statistics,
artificial intelligence and forensic science).  The positions are available
from February 1st 2001 and are funded for three years by a Scottish Higher
Education Funding Council Research
Development Grant.

The Director's post is at the AR3 level (£29,332 - £32,510) and will be
based in the Law Faculty of The University of Edinburgh.  The three
research assistants, at the AR1A or AR2 level (£16,775 - £25,213), will be
based in the three collaborating departments: Mathematics and Statistics
(Edinburgh), Artificial Intelligence Applications Institute, (Division of
Informatics, Edinburgh) and the Division of Law at Glasgow Caledonian
University. The Director will be in charge of the day-to-day running of the
Centre and will report to the convenor of the Management Board, Dr. C.G.G.
Aitken.

Applicants for the Director's post should have several years' post-doctoral
or equivalent experience in some or all of the following areas: law,
especially socio-legal or criminological research; forensic science;
artificial intelligence/knowledge management; and statistics.

Applicants for the research assistants' posts should have relevant
experience, preferably including qualifications in one or more of the above
areas. These applicants should have, or almost have, completed a PhD, or
have equivalent qualifications and/or experience.

For particular posts, preference will be given to candidates who have
experience or interest in: Bayesian statistics; law and the evaluation of
evidence; modelling of business processes and/or neural networks; and
programming in Java or a similar language.
