Saw same this summer: young chap come back from costa del tropica. He'd
expressed a live larva himself from his own thigh and shown it to his
GP, who sent him to us to explore a similar lesion on his shoulder.
Retrieved dead larva from there (I+D type thing). Now, this is as close
as we get to a major event in our little cottage hospital, so I rang the
consultant microbiologist in great excitement who came down and
retrieved the beastie in a pot and sent it off for i.d. He
(microbioloblokey) immediately told us it was just a fly larva and not
to worry about it - harmless, no specific treatment needed (cutaneous
myasis). The formal i.d. report came back some weeks later from the dept
of medical ento-clever-ology with lots of long latin words on it
confirming it was a fly larva. Presumably in another 10 years I might
see another one, and take it all in my stride then.
