Yes Gautum,
The nurse directed and nurse orientated ATLS course (complete with
scenarios) go down very well with our staff. For many years we have been
running simulated cardiac arrests thorughout the hospital in Brighton. The
pager goes off as per the usual cardiac arrest 'tune' followed by "Simulated
cardiac arrest on Level X, Dr's A, B and C to attend and the on call
anaethetist" who arrive short of breath to practice a cardiac arrest
scenario provided by the RTO with the mannequin laid out appropriately. We
are currently trying to vaidate this system of; practice based scenario
management; in being effective in retaining skills and knowledge in ALS. No
results yet but watch this space...
Re: ATLS scenario teaching we are also co-ordinating similar 'trauma'
scenarios with video taping and feedback via de-brief to those involved.
We also encourage our nurses and medical staff to attend ALS courses and
ATLS courses as observors or candidates. As many of you will know Brighton
has quite a reputation in ALS etc courtesy of Douglas Chamberlain and
laterally Geoff Bryant and others. In my view there is no doubt that as the
numbers of our nurses who are ALS certified has increased so has the
standard of our resusciations increased. Having reflected on the views
expressed about ALS courses on the list it is my view that, based on our
experience, the quality of 'resuscitation' be it peri-arrest, paediatric,
trauma or cardiac is proportionate to the number of people who have
'attended' life support courses.
